We Went Back to Mississippi...

I have been editing pics from a wedding that we shot...last spring.  Almost a year ago to the day actually.  On the day of the April 27th tornadoes, we were in the early stages of packing to leave town for the weekend.  Pete's cousin Jen was getting married that weekend on the campus of MSU {Pete shot her sister's wedding back in '09}.  He was the photographer, and I was planning to help him.  Because of the damage the tornadoes caused our area, we were without power {for almost a week it would turn out} and headed out of town early.  We drove through the disaster that Tuscaloosa had become just a day after the tornadoes.  We didn't see much thanks to it being almost dark and the limited power in the area, but you could feel the devastation in the air.  And the sense of community.  We stopped at a Burger King on the outskirts of town - 1 of the first places we found that had power since we left home.  There was a feeling of relief as well as unity among everyone there.  Not just your average exchange of "Roll Tide's" or similar greeting at any college town, but a concern for each other in all that had happened.  Luckily, our cousin's wedding plans were untouched by the devastation of the many tornadoes. With Pete & I both shooting, there were MANY pictures to work through.  Here are a few {yeah, just a few} of my favorites...

Wordless Wednesday - Baseball

"Baseball gives every American boy a chance to excel, not just to be as good as someone else but to be better than someone else.  This is the nature of man and the name of the game." ~ Ted Williams

Food. It's What's for Dinner

I have gotten off track lately with our menu thanks to the busyness of packing and traveling.  Hopefully I can get back to it now that things are somewhat calmer.  I'll be trying to work through some of our soups in the freezer to make room for warmer weather dishes.  Our menu this week...

Monday - out - we have errands to run after school
Tuesday - Taco Soup, cornbread
Wednesday - Chicken Casserole, rice, beans
Thursday - Slow Cooker Pulled Pork Sandwiches, slaw, chips
Friday - Grilled Burgers, potato salad, baked beans
Saturday - Party food for Grace's birthday and/or leftovers
Sunday - Santa Fe Chicken Burritos, Chips & Salsa

What's for dinner?  Have you tried any new recipes?

Baseball

Baseball season opened this weekend.  Sam is ready.  He has been playing at first base a good bit so far.  During their 2nd game, he caught the first pitched ball of the game that was a foul.  Great start to the game!  It was a beautiful catch!

Sam is still working out his hitting, but he is getting there.  He hit a homerun and a triple during their last game.

With this kind of seriousness, how can he NOT get there?

I'm looking forward to the rest of the season.  It is becoming more and more fun to watch as the boys learn more about the game.

The only downside...I have to wear orange.  Go Mets!  And Roll Tide!

Five

Grace will be celebrating her birthday for a while this year.  Thanks to a super busy schedule right now {does that ever change?}, we celebrated her birthday this weekend as a family.  We'll celebrate with some friends later.

One of Grace's favorite "grown up" restaurants is PF Chang's.  She occasionally gets to go there with Pete & I at lunch {and every once in a while we all go for dinner}, but it has been a while since we have taken her.  We promised her we would take her there for her birthday dinner if that is where she wanted to go - and she was all over that idea!  We went Friday for an early dinner to avoid having to wait a long time and also so we could catch a movie afterwards.  We were talking while waiting for our food, and Grace said she needed to tell the waitress something.  She wanted to make sure the waitress knew it was {almost} her birthday - not knowing that most restaurants will give you a dessert to celebrate.  The next time the waitress came around, we filled her in on Grace's exciting news.  Grace was surprised to find out that she could a free dessert of her own...as long as she ate good.  If only it was that easy to get that girl to eat every day.

Grace had a little help from Daddy, but she finished her dessert.

My April Fool baby loves chocolate!
Since it was a little late when we got home, we waited until Saturday to give Grace her presents.  She can pick out a laundry list of things she wants on any given trip to the store, so I was surprised to hear her ask OVER and OVER and OVER for a Leap Pad.  As in, "Momma, did you get me a leap pad yet?"  Or while we were out shopping..."Momma, here's a leap pad.  Can you get it for my birthday?"  Pete's response was that she was just getting bags of sticks & rocks - no leap pad - which of course started arguments with Grace.  As we were wrapping her gifts, Pete went out back with a sandwich bag to get Grace's rocks.  He put them in a small gift bag, and that was the first gift she opened.

Next, I had her open her obligatory clothes gift, which she proceeded to fling graciously out of the bag.

And finally, she opened her leap pad.  She was so excited!

Sam had been asking to spend the night with Grandma & Papa, so we arranged for the kids to spend the night with them Saturday night.  After Sam's game, we took them over to Grandma's and had cupcakes. Yum!

Grandma mentioned to Grace that she hadn't shopped for her birthday yet...and really had some time since we hadn't had her "big" party yet.  The next morning when Grace got up, Grandma told her "Happy Birthday!" to which Grace responded..."you need to go shopping sometime."  Leave it to Grace to be tactful.  Or not. Maybe she gets that from her great aunt. :-)  We got home later that night to find that Grandma had been shopping and made a delivery.  Grace was both surprised and excited!  She has been wanting a "big kid" scooter.

Despite the busyness of the weekend, we had fun celebrating FIVE with Grace.  She is getting so big - and actually has grown just over an inch since December.  I can't believe she is just a few months from starting school.

We took donuts to school to celebrate with Grace's friends.
While the kids were gone this weekend, we got supplies {including duct tape, 2x4's and PVC pipefor Grace's Toy Story Jessie party.  Any guesses what we're doing?  Guess I should get busy working on that stuff.  And Grace's tactfulness.

*I haven't been compensated for the promotion of PF Chang's, Leap Pads, scooters, chocolate donuts, cupcakes, Jessie or bags of rocks mentioned in this post.
